Information On Meteorites

Meteorites are defined as rocks that are not from earth, and they reach earth by surviving the trip through the earth’s atmosphere. When a meteorite is in space it has a different name, and it is known as a meteoroid. When the meteoroid gets closer to earth it will start to burn up in the atmosphere, the meteorite is then known as a meteor, or as some others would call them shooting stars.

Very few meteoroids will actually survive and make it to the earth’s surface as our atmosphere does a great job of shielding us from the violent rock shower that goes on in space. It is estimated that there are over 32,000 meteorites that are on the earth, so as you can see they are extremely rare and owning one makes it more unique than gold is.

When a meteor is sighted and someone actually discovers the meteorite that they saw fall, then they are known as falls. Others that are just found are known as finds, cool names huh. Larger meteorites are usually named by the site of the fall, as a town name or city name. By large we are talking about ones that were big enough to make a crater.

So meteorites have a lot of unique things about them, tracking down there point of origin isn’t always that easy. Some have been guessed to come from the moon, and even Venus and Mercury, while most of them we think come from the asteroid belt.
